A new student started at Thorndyke Elementary in December. Crying every day, he would refuse to go to class and was having trouble making friends. He was also not getting classwork done as a result.

Site Coordinator, Sebastian Dukworth, did three check ins with him every day. When they first started checked in with a happiness scale he would rate himself at a two.

But after three weeks he needed fewer check ins and his happiness ratings went up. He started making friends and the feedback from his teachers became so positive. The school librarian says he’s now a different kid.

This is a drawing he did for Sebastian where he rates himself a five! Social Emotional Learning is a key to academic success.
