Have you ever heard of that term “rebuilding the plane as its landing”? That is what we have been doing as we ask ourselves “How can we support students in schools when they aren’t in schools?”
This has led to us shifting our service model so that our staff can still support students and their families every day.
COVID-19 Emergency Fund
Part of that support is our COVID-19 Emergency Fund. We setup this emergency fund to address the immediate needs of economically vulnerable populations.
With your support, we can come together and support those most impacted by addressing the economic impact of reduced and lost work due to the broader COVID-19 outbreak. Families need food, personal care items, rental and utility assistance, gas cards, and more.
The Community Comes Through
We are thrilled to receive support from the Cliff Avril Foundation with a $5,000 grant towards food distribution with a matching $5,000 gift from Cliff Avril himself! His contributions have joined contributions from local companies Kaye Smith, and King & Bunny’s Appliances, along with individuals’ support to raise almost $25,000 in the first two weeks after the school closures.
The community has come through in other creative ways. Local restaurants have reached out to us about providing community meals for students and their families. So far, we have had Yankee Grill provide breakfast for over 100 and The Hop Garden pledged to provide dinner for two nights.
Much of this this support has been done in partnership with the Renton Chamber of Commerce. They have worked tirelessly to connect generous community members to the folks who are hardest hit.
We are collaborating with the Renton Improvement Zone Partnership and the Renton School District to create the Renton Area Support Request form for families to request support. Our team is managing and processing the requests. We received 30 requests within the first day of publishing the form.
What is in store for tomorrow?
You can still make a gift to our COVID-19 Emergency Fund HERE.
You can also participate in our Personal Care Drive. These items are in high need and our staff are able to quickly get these supplies in the hands of families.
We will keep you up to date as circumstances evolve and we continue to evaluate the needs of students and available community supports, and we will be nimble with our service delivery so we may best meet the needs of students and families. Thank you for being the “Community” in Communities In Schools.
